PLEASE READ:
I know it's more than a little late to be contributing to this discussion, but for anyone happening upon this, it is true that (though it is counter intuitive) a Beware of Dog sign may actually increase your liability.
The best way to protect yourself is to instead get a simple "No Trespassing" sign. In most areas, a sign is necessarily to remove what is referred to as an implied invitation. This will remove liability for anything that occurs on your property to a party not explicitly invited. As far as welcomed guests go, it's best to place the dog away.

I was actually relieved to find this posting as I was feeling very similarly judged or rather misjudged like the original post! I have given wonderful caring homes to dogs for over 40 years - I spay or neuter my pets, give them regular vet care, they do not want for feed or water, we work at home on a farm so they get to "play" with us all day but I didn't "qualify" as a good home according to rescue standards because we have an outside kennel "bedroom" for our dogs (heated and ventilated by the way). I did ask outright if the rescues had the preference for dogs living inside and they answered they will only allow people to adopt if the dogs are inside. Very appropriate for poodle types and city dwellers but very sad for the sporting breed dog I was looking at and others with high energy that would be so happy in a country setting. And too bad for the potential new forever families that are being passed over for these wonderful animals. I never brought up my allergy to dogs inside as I doubt the people at the rescue would even care - there was such an adament prejudice towards erroneously assuming that an outside dog is unloved or ignored or not a part of the family ... I was in no position to change anyone's mind as they were pretty well made up, but I get to "vent" here and there will be no more "rescues" for me.

Go to your local hardware store and purchase some lacquer thinner and a paint brush. Using the brush, apply a coat of the lacquer thinner over the graffiti and wait for it to soften - about 10 to 15 minutes. Using a clean rag rub the spray-paint off, taking care not to smear it. Make sure to rub in one direction.

After the paint is off spray the fence with dish-washing liquid (1/4 cup into a quart spray bottle, mixed with water.) Wipe with a sponge. Last, spray fence with hose to remove all residue.

Lowes carries similar ones. They are made of wood and have excellent reviews. They cost around $30.00 and are called Madison Mill something. Much cheaper than the baby gates. I'm ordering one today.

Hope I was helpful.

Don't do it. I have a pitbull basenji mix who also has an extremely high prey drive. Even on the highest setting on the fence, she still runs through. After she escapes she is then afraid to come back in the yard. Get a dog run.

We place the wire carefully underneath every newly paved driveway. If you are installing it over an existing one, then you have to chip-away at it. It gets messy but, with black spray paint over it, is always better than having a loved dog run away!

Coyotes don't hunt in packs. They are lone hunters and will easily be deterred by a Rott, GSD or Beauceron(look it up).

Nothing more irritating than a Dog Barking. A good bark collar will fix the problem fast.

I suppose you could use a post to nail it down into the ground, much like you would when you are using it to anchor down a tent site.
